Chapter 1 - THE CODE IN TOBY’S BLOODElijah Mercer burst through the pediatric emergency doors carrying a child who looked almost lifeless in his arms.

“Toby!” a nurse shouted as the boy’s head rolled against his father’s shoulder.

His lips were blue. His small chest barely moved. One sneaker was missing, and the sleeve of his dinosaur pajamas had been torn near the wrist.

Elijah saw Naomi Brooks across the crowded department and stopped so suddenly that another nurse nearly collided with him.

Eight years had passed since he had last stood this close to her.

There was no time for the shock in either of their faces.

He pushed his four-year-old son toward her.

“Please… save him.”

Naomi took command before the final word left his mouth.

“Trauma bed three. Oxygen. Cardiac monitor. Prepare pediatric airway equipment.”

She lifted Toby from Elijah’s arms and placed him on the bed. A nurse fitted an oxygen mask over the child’s face while Naomi inserted an IV line with fast, precise movements.

Toby’s oxygen saturation flashed dangerously low.

“Come on, sweetheart,” Naomi said. “Stay with me.”

Cassandra rushed through the curtain behind them, clutching a black handbag against her chest. Her hair was wet from the rain, and panic sharpened every movement.

“It was shrimp!” she screamed. “Naomi knows about his allergy. She’s using him for revenge!”

Naomi did not look away from the monitor.

“I haven’t seen this child before tonight.”

“You hate Elijah.”

“I am treating your son.”

Cassandra recoiled at the word your, as though it carried an accusation Naomi had not intended.

Something shifted inside her handbag.

A small brown bottle without a label slid partly into view.

Naomi noticed.

So did Toby.

His eyelids fluttered beneath the oxygen mask. He lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward Cassandra’s bag.

Naomi bent close.

“What are you trying to tell me?”

Toby’s voice was barely audible.

“It was Mommy’s medicine.”

Cassandra snatched the bag behind her back.

“He’s confused.”

Naomi straightened.

“Put the bag on the counter.”

“No.”

“Elijah, take it from her.”

Cassandra turned on him.

“You believe her after everything she did to us?”

Elijah stared at the bottle.

“What medicine did you give him?”

“Nothing dangerous.”

“That is not an answer.”

Cassandra tried to step away, but Naomi pulled on gloves and removed the bottle herself. A sweet chemical odor clung to the cap.

She sealed it inside an evidence bag beside Toby’s blood tubes.

The medical director, Dr. Malcolm Vane, entered the trauma room. His silver hair was perfectly combed despite the chaos around him.

“Dr. Brooks, step away from this case.”

Naomi turned sharply.

“He is unstable.”

“You have a personal history with the father.”

“I also have the only pediatric airway certification currently in this room.”

“I’ll assign someone else.”

Naomi moved between Vane and the blood samples.

“Preserve every sample and lock the chart.”

Vane’s expression hardened.

“You are giving orders in my department.”

“I am protecting a poisoned child.”

The word silenced everyone.

Cassandra’s face collapsed.

Elijah looked from her to the bottle.

“You said it was shrimp.”

“That’s what I thought.”

“You brought an unlabeled medicine into our house.”

“It was supposed to protect him.”

“From what?”

Cassandra did not answer.

The toxicology alert arrived six minutes later.

A nurse rushed from the laboratory corridor carrying a tablet. She handed it to Naomi without speaking.

Naomi read the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands went still.

The compound was not a household medication. It was an experimental immune-response regulator that had never received approval for human use.

Beneath the chemical profile appeared an internal identification code:

MERCER BIODYNAMICS — ARX-417

Elijah’s company.

Naomi turned the screen toward him.

“This drug came from your company.”

Elijah looked at the code.

All color drained from his face.

“That compound was destroyed eight years ago.”

Cassandra’s phone began ringing inside her handbag.

The caller identification displayed:

FIONA MERCER — LABORATORY DIRECTOR

Elijah’s younger sister.

Cassandra desperately locked the screen.

Security doors sealed around the trauma department as police officers approached behind the frosted glass.

Toby opened his eyes again.

He whispered something beneath the oxygen mask.

Naomi leaned closer.

This time, she heard him.

“There was another dose.”
