Chapter 13 - THE ISLAND LABORATORYThe research campus appeared abandoned from the water.

Snow-darkened trees surrounded low concrete buildings. No lights showed above ground, but thermal scans revealed power beneath the island.

Police entered through a freight tunnel.

Dana led Naomi and Elijah toward the pediatric level. She remembered the layout from childhood visits with her father, though she had been told the facility stored laboratory animals.

The first room contained schoolbooks, exercise equipment, and photographs of Toby and Ivy.

The second held medical records documenting eight years of treatment.

The patient was listed as Mason Vale.

The photograph showed an eight-year-old boy with Elijah’s eyes and Naomi’s expression.

Micah.

Alive.

A live camera displayed him sitting on a bed in a deeper room. He wore a cardiac monitor and held a tablet against his chest.

Naomi pressed one hand against the screen.

Elijah whispered his son’s name.

The boy looked toward the camera as though he heard them.

Then Dr. Vane entered his room.

He placed a syringe beside the bed.

Naomi’s radio activated.

Vane’s voice filled the tunnel.

“Come alone, Naomi.”

Police tried to trace the internal signal.

Every door between the team and Micah locked.

Vane continued.

“The boy cannot survive without the completed ARX treatment.”

“You have said that about every child.”

“Micah’s immune system is failing.”

“Then allow independent doctors inside.”

“You are the independent doctor.”

“No. I am his mother, which is why you chose me.”

Vane wanted Naomi to administer the final ARX dose on camera.

If she did, he could claim she accepted the experiment and validate the patent through maternal consent.

If she refused and Micah deteriorated, he could blame her for the death of the child she had searched for.

The decision had been designed before Toby collapsed.

Naomi refused to enter alone.

Dana opened an old service route beneath the patient rooms. She, Elijah, and two officers crawled through the narrow tunnel while Vane continued speaking.

“He asks about you every birthday.”

Naomi kept moving.

“He knows you became a doctor.”

She did not answer.

“He believes you chose another life.”

Naomi reached the ventilation grate beneath Micah’s room.

The boy sat above them.

Vane held the syringe near his IV.

“You can stop this,” Elijah shouted through the metal.

Micah looked toward the floor.

“Dad?”

Elijah froze.

The boy recognized his voice.

Vane opened the room’s speaker.

“Elijah, tell Naomi what you signed after Micah’s collapse.”

Elijah’s face changed.

Naomi looked at him.

“What did you sign?”

He admitted that Thomas Mercer offered one final experimental intervention after doctors declared Micah unlikely to survive. Elijah signed while Naomi was sedated.

He believed the treatment failed.

He never knew the child lived.

“You authorized them to take him,” Naomi said.

“I authorized a procedure.”

“You signed away access.”

“Yes.”

Again, the line between deception and willing ignorance.

Elijah had trusted his father because the alternative required confronting the possibility that the company harmed Micah.

Vane held up the consent page.

“His father authorized continued care.”

“Eight years ago,” Naomi replied. “He cannot authorize imprisonment.”

Micah moved toward the speaker.

“I don’t want the shot.”

Vane looked at him.

“You will die.”

“You always say that.”

The boy had heard the threat before.

Naomi understood.

Micah’s condition may be serious, but Vane had used predicted death to maintain control for eight years.

Dana cut power to the room.

The locks released.

Police breached the door.

Vane seized the syringe and backed toward an emergency exit.

No final arrest occurred.

He triggered the island’s automated evacuation system and disappeared through a smoke-filled service corridor.

Naomi reached Micah.

She stopped several feet away.

He stared at her with guarded eyes.

“You’re my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come?”

“I was told you died.”

He looked toward Elijah.

“Did he know?”

“Not that you survived,” Naomi said.

She refused to build their reunion on a cleaner lie.

Micah looked toward the syringe Vane left behind.

“That isn’t for me.”

“Who is it for?”

“The First Mother.”

A monitor activated.

A woman lay inside another room beneath the island.

Her patient file identified her as Eleanor Brooks.
