Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN CALLING CASSANDRACassandra refused to unlock her phone.

Detective Aaron Cole stood beside the trauma-room entrance while Elijah watched his wife clutch the device with both hands.

“It contains private medical messages,” Cassandra said.

“A child nearly stopped breathing,” Cole replied. “Privacy does not erase evidence.”

“She is calling me because Toby is sick.”

Elijah’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“Fiona didn’t know he was here until the hospital contacted the company.”

Cassandra looked at him.

“You don’t know that.”

“No one from Mercer Biodynamics should have known about his blood results yet.”

Naomi remained beside Toby’s bed, adjusting the oxygen flow. His color had improved, but the monitor showed an irregular heartbeat and unstable blood pressure.

The toxicology report revealed something worse than a single overdose.

ARX-417 had been present in Toby’s body for weeks.

Small amounts had accumulated in his hair, liver enzymes, and immune cells. The concentration in his blood came from a larger dose administered that evening, but he had been receiving microdoses repeatedly.

Naomi looked at Cassandra.

“How long have you been giving him that bottle?”

“I didn’t know what it was.”

“How long?”

“Six weeks.”

Elijah closed his eyes.

“You dosed our son for six weeks without telling me?”

“It came with instructions.”

“From whom?”

Cassandra looked toward the phone.

“Fiona.”

Elijah took one step back.

“My sister would never send an unlabeled medication.”

“She said the label had to be removed because the product was confidential.”

“And you accepted that?”

“She told me Toby inherited your family’s immune defect.”

Naomi’s hands stopped above the IV pump.

“What defect?”

Cassandra looked at her with open hatred.

“The one that killed your baby.”

The trauma room became silent.

Eight years earlier, Naomi and Elijah’s infant son, Micah, suffered a sudden immune collapse inside a Mercer Biodynamics research clinic. He died before sunrise.

The company called it an undiagnosed genetic disorder.

Naomi called it negligence.

The marriage ended within months.

Elijah later claimed every sample, embryo, and research file connected to Micah had been destroyed.

Naomi looked at Toby.

His eyes.

The curve of his mouth.

The small indentation beside his left eyebrow.

She had noticed the resemblance when Elijah carried him through the emergency doors. She told herself grief was creating patterns.

Now Cassandra’s words made the resemblance impossible to ignore.

“What exactly did Fiona tell you?” Naomi asked.

“That Toby had the same markers as Micah. She said ARX-417 would prevent the condition from activating.”

“ARX-417 was never a preventative medication.”

Cassandra’s anger faltered.

“What was it?”

“A cellular stress agent.”

Elijah looked at Naomi.

“You designed it.”

“I designed a precursor molecule intended to map immune reactions. It was not supposed to be administered to children.”

Vane stepped closer.

“That research remains company property.”

Naomi turned on him.

“A four-year-old is lying beneath an oxygen mask because someone treated his body like company property.”

Vane lowered his voice.

“You are emotionally compromised.”

“And you are trying very hard to keep me from reading the samples.”

Detective Cole ordered Cassandra’s phone seized.

She tightened her grip until Elijah reached for it.

“Give it to him.”

“You’ll blame me.”

“If you lied, I will.”

“What if Fiona lied first?”

The phone rang again.

This time, Elijah answered before Cassandra could stop him.

“Fiona?”

A woman’s voice emerged through the speaker.

“Do not let Naomi test Toby’s marrow.”

Elijah stared at the screen.

“Where are you?”

“Get Cassandra and the boy out of the hospital.”

“What did you give him?”

The woman paused.

“Something Naomi created.”

Naomi moved closer.

“Fiona, listen to me. Toby is unstable. I need the exact composition.”

The caller laughed softly.

“You always believed saving the child made you innocent.”

The line disconnected.

Elijah looked shaken.

“That sounded like Fiona.”

Naomi studied the call record.

The number belonged to Fiona’s laboratory extension, but the signal had routed through an internal hospital server.

Someone inside Harborview had placed the call.

The real Fiona might not have made it.

A laboratory technician entered with a second sealed report.

Toby’s blood contained donor-derived immune cells.

Naomi expected them to belong to Cassandra or Elijah.

They did not.

The donor profile matched a sample stored under Naomi’s name.

A sample she had provided during her pregnancy with Micah.

Toby carried Naomi’s cells.

Cassandra stared at the result.

“That’s impossible.”

Naomi looked toward Elijah.

His face revealed fear before he spoke.

“Elijah,” she said, “whose child is he?”

👉 Toby’s blood carried Naomi’s biological markers, forcing Elijah to confront a secret that began before Cassandra ever became the boy’s mother.
