Chapter 14 - THE FIRST MOTHEREleanor Brooks was eighty-three years old.

She lay beneath an oxygen mask, surrounded by machines that continuously harvested and analyzed her blood. Her legal death had allowed Project ARX to use her body without family interference.
Naomi stood outside the glass.
“You selected me.”
Eleanor opened her eyes.
“I tried to protect you.”
“You enrolled me in experiments.”
“I believed Malcolm could cure what killed our family.”
“What illness?”
Eleanor’s mother and two sisters died from severe immune reactions before modern treatment existed. Eleanor carried a rare genetic pattern that allowed survival but caused unpredictable inflammatory crises.
Vane studied her as a young physician.
Thomas Mercer saw commercial potential.
They built the early program around her descendants.
Naomi’s mother was pressured to enroll her.
Naomi’s embryos were preserved.
Micah, Toby, and Ivy became successive attempts to stabilize the inherited response.
“You called yourself the First Mother,” Naomi said.
“Malcolm called me that.”
“You continued authorizing treatment after you knew children were harmed.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“He promised the next version would repair the damage.”
The promise repeated across every generation.
One more trial.
One more secret.
One more child exposed so the previous suffering would not be meaningless.
Eleanor finally attempted to stop the program when Micah survived his declared death. She hid parts of the archive and helped Dana copy records.
Vane declared her dead and confined her to the island.
“Why did your biometric code remain active?” Fiona asked through the secure hospital feed.
“Because Malcolm needed my bloodline authorization for every patent.”
Eleanor’s body had become both scientific material and legal key.
The syringe Vane left in Micah’s room contained the final ARX activator.
It required injection into Eleanor, not Naomi.
If Eleanor’s body produced the predicted response, Vane could claim the treatment worked across four generations.
The patent would become extraordinarily valuable.
Naomi ordered all experimental infusions stopped.
Independent doctors warned that abrupt withdrawal might destabilize Eleanor, Micah, Toby, and Ivy.
The children were medically linked through years of manipulated treatment.
Stopping the experiment could not be as simple as unplugging machines.
But continuing it under Vane’s design remained unacceptable.
Naomi formed an independent care team with no Mercer or Harborview ownership. Every intervention required patient or guardian consent and external review.
It was slower.
Messier.
Safer than allowing one powerful physician to decide.
Fiona agreed to surrender the complete Mercer research archive to federal investigators.
The company board removed her immediately.
Elijah signed away his voting control to prevent another executive from destroying evidence.
Cassandra entered a treatment agreement requiring supervision and full disclosure before she could resume caring for Toby independently.
Dana remained under investigation but provided access to hidden facilities.
No one received instant forgiveness.
No one was allowed to purchase innocence with cooperation.
Micah asked to see Toby and Ivy.
The three children met through a hospital video call.
Toby stared at the older boy.
“You’re the phone friend.”
Micah nodded.
Ivy touched the screen.
“Are we brothers and sister?”
“No one explained it right,” Micah said.
Naomi sat nearby.
“You share a complicated biological connection.”
Toby frowned.
“That means yes.”
For the moment, yes was enough.
Detective Cole recovered Vane’s escape vehicle near the ferry terminal.
Inside were passports under six names, Naomi’s copied medical credentials, Fiona’s voice equipment, and Cassandra’s facial prosthetic.
Vane had built an entire portable identity laboratory.
The final item was an evidence bag containing a child’s blood sample.
Label:
T-4 — Post-collapse
The sample had been collected after Toby arrived at Harborview.
Someone inside the trauma room had given it to Vane before he fled.
Security footage showed every person present.
Naomi.
Elijah.
Cassandra.
Fiona.
Vane.
The nurses.
And a hospital aide named Rachel Stone.
Fiona recognized the aide.
“Her real name is Helen Mercer.”
Elijah stared.
Their mother had supposedly died when they were children.
Thomas Mercer told them she died from the family immune disorder.
Her body was never shown.
The First Mother was not only Naomi’s ancestor.
The bloodlines had been connected through both families.
Helen Mercer had worked for Vane for decades.

The aide who helped treat Toby may have been the person who activated his final dose.
👉 Elijah’s presumed-dead mother had stood inside the trauma room, close enough to steal Toby’s blood while everyone watched Cassandra.
