Dana surrendered after they replaced the infusion with standard supportive care. No immediate arrest occurred because she was also the only person who knew the complete ARX protocol.
Ivy was five years old, small for her age, and covered with old medical adhesive marks. She remained conscious long enough to ask for Toby.
Naomi saw her through a secure video call.
The girl resembled Toby.
She also resembled Micah.
Not the infant face Naomi remembered from the final hospital photograph, but the expression around the eyes—the solemn concentration he showed before crying.
Genetic specialists reviewed the records.
Toby and Ivy originated from the same embryo, but the embryo had been altered before division.
Micah’s stored stem cells had been introduced during the earliest developmental stage.
The children contained genetic material from Naomi, Elijah, and cellular contributions taken from their deceased son.
Vane had not simply created siblings.
He attempted to preserve Micah through them.
Naomi listened without moving.
“You used my dead baby to build two replacement children.”
Vane remained inside a secured Harborview office under police supervision.
“I used viable cells to prevent a genetic disease from destroying the remaining embryos.”
“Did the disease exist?”
“We believed it did.”
“You created the test that diagnosed it.”
“The marker was present in Micah.”
“Because ARX had already been administered to him?”
Vane did not answer.
The original toxicology archive showed Micah received an early ARX compound hours before his fatal collapse.
The company had always claimed the child’s death inspired the research.
In reality, the research caused the death.
Elijah read the report beside Toby’s bed.
“My father told me the dose came afterward.”
“He lied,” Fiona said.
“You were in the laboratory.”
“I was twenty-three and processing coded samples. I did not know M-1 was Micah.”
Naomi looked at both siblings.
The system survived because everyone saw only a piece and accepted the labels placed over human lives.
Fiona’s ignorance had been cultivated.
It had also been convenient.
She advanced inside the company while never asking which children belonged to the codes.
Dana joined the call from Northgate.
“My father believed Micah’s death was reversible.”
Naomi stared at her.
“Death is not a laboratory error you correct with another child.”
“I know that now.”
“When did you know?”
“After Ivy was born.”
“Yet you continued.”
“My father said stopping the compound would kill her.”
“Did you verify that independently?”
“No.”
Dana had carried Ivy believing she was helping restore what Vane took from Naomi and Elijah. Once the child was born, she became attached and tried to reduce the experiments.
Vane threatened to remove Ivy and replace Dana with another caregiver.
He declared Dana dead legally and trapped her inside Project ARX.
She copied Naomi’s identity because it allowed her to enter hospitals and access emergency medication for Ivy.
“You impersonated me for years,” Naomi said.
“Yes.”
“You signed research papers in my name.”
“Yes.”
“You removed Ivy tonight.”
“To keep my father from giving her the final dose.”
“Then why take her to Northgate?”
“The antidote was there.”
Dana’s rescue had still followed the same secretive logic that created the danger.
She did not trust police, Naomi, or independent doctors.
She chose alone.
The result made Naomi appear to kidnap a child.
Detective Cole recovered the Northgate server.
It contained communications between Vane and an executive identified only as F.M.
Elijah assumed the initials meant Fiona Mercer.
Fiona denied it.
The messages discussed selling ARX after a successful “maternal rescue event.”
One sentence read:
Naomi will provide the missing blood once Toby collapses. Fiona will preserve the company after Elijah accepts blame.
Fiona stared at the screen.
“That is not me.”
Dana looked toward her.
“No. F.M. is not Fiona Mercer.”
“Who is it?”
“First Mother.”
The phrase referred to the woman whose cells began Project ARX before Naomi, Micah, or the embryos.
Her identity remained sealed.
Vane smiled when investigators questioned him.
“You have been asking who poisoned Toby.”
He looked toward Naomi.
