Chapter 5 - THE CHILD BEHIND THE LABORATORY WALLToby stabilized after Naomi’s blood was used to create an emergency antidote.

The treatment remained risky, but his oxygen level rose and his heart rhythm settled. Elijah stood beside the bed, crying silently as Toby’s fingers closed around his hand.

Naomi did not experience the relief as a reunion.

Toby was still Cassandra’s frightened four-year-old who wanted the woman he called Mommy.

When he woke fully, he reached for Cassandra.

She moved toward him, but Detective Cole stopped her until doctors determined whether she posed an immediate danger.

Toby began crying.

Naomi looked at Cole.

“Let her stand where he can see her.”

Cassandra remained several feet from the bed.

“I’m here, baby.”

“Don’t give me the medicine.”

Her face broke.

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

The promise came late, but Toby needed to hear it.

Naomi asked about the girl.

Toby described a child who appeared on Cassandra’s phone during “medicine time.” The girl looked older than him and wore a hospital bracelet.

“She took it too,” he whispered. “She cried.”

Cassandra claimed she had never shown him such a video.

Detectives recovered deleted files from her phone.

Every evening after Cassandra administered the microdose, an application opened automatically and displayed another child receiving the same bottle inside a clinical room.

Cassandra believed the video proved the medication was safe.

The footage had also trained Toby to accept the ritual.

The girl’s hospital bracelet carried the code:

F-5

Fiona stared at it.

“That was my childhood research number.”

Elijah looked at his sister.

“You were in Project ARX?”

Fiona’s face turned pale.

She remembered repeated allergies, hospital rooms, and their father telling her she suffered from a rare immune disorder. She did not remember ARX-417.

Vane had treated her from ages five through nine.

The girl in the video was not Fiona as a child. The recording was current.

Someone had assigned Fiona’s old identity to another patient.

The signal originated from Harborview’s laboratory corridor.

Police searched the visible rooms and found nothing.

Naomi noticed one wall on the hospital plans was nearly ten feet thicker than the architecture required.

A secured door had been covered by shelving.

Vane’s master code opened it.

Behind the laboratory wall stood a small pediatric unit with two beds, oxygen equipment, locked cabinets, and hidden cameras.

One bed had recently been occupied.

A child’s drawing rested on the pillow.

It showed Toby beside a girl with red hair.

Between them stood Naomi.

The words beneath the picture read:

THE DOCTOR HAS TO CHOOSE.

The second bed contained restraints and an IV bag labeled ARX-417.

The bag was still warm.

Someone had moved the girl minutes earlier.

Security logs showed a gurney leaving through the service elevator during Toby’s antidote preparation.

The transfer order carried Naomi’s electronic signature.

She had never entered it.

Dr. Vane had built a duplicate version of her hospital identity just as someone had copied Fiona.

The hidden unit contained years of recordings.

Fiona as a child.

Micah as an infant.

Toby from birth.

And the unknown girl.

Project ARX had moved through generations under different names.

Fiona opened the girl’s medical file.

Her legal name was Ivy Lane.

Her genetic profile was restricted.

The emergency contact field listed Elijah Mercer.

He stared at the screen.

“I have never heard of her.”

Naomi opened the sealed DNA summary.

Ivy shared biological markers with Toby.

Not as an ordinary sibling.

The similarity suggested both children came from the same original embryo.

The embryo had been divided before implantation.

Toby had an identical genetic twin.

One embryo became two children.

Cassandra carried Toby.

Someone else carried Ivy.

Fiona looked toward Vane.

“Where is she?”

Vane smiled faintly.

“Ask Naomi why her genetic line keeps surviving what other children cannot.”

👉 Toby had an unknown identical twin, and someone had raised her inside Harborview for the same experiment that nearly killed him.
