Chapter 15 - THE SAMPLE TAKEN AFTER MIDNIGHTHelen Mercer’s hospital badge was false.

Her face appeared in only three clear frames before she disappeared through the laboratory corridor. Facial comparison matched old family photographs despite cosmetic alterations and three decades of age.
Elijah stared at the image.
“I watched them bury her.”
Fiona shook her head.
“The coffin was closed.”
Their father claimed Helen died after a sudden immune collapse. The children were sent to relatives during the funeral preparations.
No independent records confirmed the death.
Eleanor watched the photograph from the island hospital.
“Helen was the second mother.”
Naomi looked toward her grandmother.
“What does that mean?”
Eleanor explained that Thomas Mercer’s marriage to Helen was arranged through the research foundation. Helen carried another branch of the rare immune profile.
Their children, Elijah and Fiona, were monitored from birth.
Thomas later introduced Elijah to Naomi because combining the two family lines offered the strongest ARX response.
Helen opposed using future grandchildren.
Vane declared her unstable.
Thomas helped stage her death and moved her into the identity-substitution program.
“She became one of his operators,” Eleanor said.
“Willingly?” Elijah asked.
“At first, no.”
“And later?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
Helen had spent years moving through hospitals under borrowed names, collecting samples, transporting children, and maintaining the false medical histories that protected Project ARX.
She may have believed proximity allowed her to reduce harm.
She may also have embraced the work.
Both possibilities remained open.
Toby continued improving.
Ivy remained stable.
Micah’s condition required long-term treatment, but independent doctors found no immediate evidence that he needed Vane’s final injection.
The catastrophe Vane predicted did not occur.
Fear had kept the experiment alive more effectively than medicine.
Naomi stood between the three hospital rooms, unwilling to call the moment a victory.
One child had been stolen from her.
Two had been created from her embryo without consent.
Cassandra had been manipulated into poisoning Toby.
Elijah had hidden the embryo transfer.
Fiona had protected corporate research.
Dana had copied Naomi’s identity.
Eleanor had recruited descendants into the program.
Every adult carried a different share of responsibility.
Then the outside laboratory completed its analysis of the blood sample Helen stole after Toby’s collapse.
It was not Toby’s blood.
The tube contained a mixture from two people.
One was Helen Mercer.
The other was Naomi.
Naomi had not provided that sample.
Detective Cole checked the hospital recordings.
During the emergency, the aide wearing Helen’s identity brushed against Naomi near the IV cart. A tiny puncture appeared on Naomi’s forearm in the enlarged footage.
Helen had drawn her blood without her noticing.
Fiona examined the chemical analysis.
The mixed sample contained an activated form of ARX-417 more advanced than anything found in Toby.
“Was it created after their blood was combined?” Elijah asked.
“No,” Fiona whispered. “It was already inside Naomi.”
Naomi stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
Her childhood treatments should have cleared decades earlier.
The compound was not merely stored in her tissues.
It was actively reproducing through modified immune cells.
Vane had never needed Naomi to inject the planted vial.
The childhood program had already transformed her body into a living ARX source.
A secure hospital printer activated.
A new toxicology report emerged under Naomi’s patient identity.
She had never registered as a patient.
The report listed three active compounds.
ARX-417.
The emergency antidote created from her blood.
And an unknown agent labeled:
FM-ZERO
First Mother Zero.
The report’s timestamp came from the following morning.
A blood test scheduled in the future had already been completed.
Naomi’s phone rang.
The caller identification displayed her own name.
She answered on speaker.
Helen Mercer’s voice filled the corridor.
“Malcolm thinks Eleanor was the First Mother.”
Naomi looked through the glass toward her grandmother.
“She wasn’t?”
“No.”
“Who was?”
Helen’s answer came quietly.
“You.”
Naomi’s breath stopped.
“I was born decades after the project began.”
“That is what your records say.”
A live camera feed appeared on every monitor.
A younger woman lay inside a sealed medical room. She looked exactly like Naomi at twenty-five.
Beside her bed stood Dr. Vane.
He held a newborn infant wrapped in a white blanket.
The baby’s hospital bracelet read:
NAOMI BROOKS — SUBJECT N-0
The woman on the bed turned toward the camera.
Naomi recognized her own mother, Helen Brooks.
But Helen Brooks had given birth to Naomi thirty-five years earlier.
The footage was live.
Vane smiled into the lens.
“Bring me the three children,” he said, “and I will explain which Naomi grew up outside this room.”
Behind him, another adult woman stepped into view.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same scar beneath the chin.
She looked directly at Naomi through the monitor.
Then she whispered:
“You were the substitute daughter.”
The feed cut to black.
