Chapter 11 - THE FALSE ANTIDOTENaomi refused to inject herself.

Vane expected fear to make her act before independent laboratories examined the vial.
She sent samples to three outside facilities and ordered Toby’s treatment recalculated from first principles.
Fiona supported her decision publicly.
Privately, she remained uncertain.
“If his donor cells reactivate—”
“We treat what happens,” Naomi said.
“You may not have time.”
“That is the language Vane uses to remove consent.”
Fiona looked toward Toby.
“What if he dies because we waited?”
“What if I become another source of data because we panicked?”
Neither choice felt safe.
That was the purpose of the design.
Cassandra sat beside the observation window under supervision. She asked to speak with Naomi.
“You think I’m a monster.”
“I think you gave a child an unlabeled medicine and concealed it.”
“I thought it protected him.”
“You also thought telling Elijah would end your marriage.”
Cassandra looked down.
“Yes.”
That truth mattered.
Vane’s threats were real, but Cassandra also protected her place inside the family.
She feared that if Elijah learned Toby came from Naomi’s embryo, she would lose both husband and child.
The secret dosing allowed her to remain necessary.
“I wanted to be the mother who kept him alive,” she whispered.
“You were already his mother because you raised him.”
“I didn’t believe biology would let me keep that.”
Naomi looked toward Toby.
“Biology has been used against every woman in this case. Do not let it excuse what you did.”
Cassandra nodded.
“I won’t.”
She gave detectives access to a hidden message archive. The cloned Fiona account repeatedly warned that Naomi planned to reclaim Toby once she discovered his genetics.
Vane had turned Cassandra’s insecurity into medical compliance.
The outside toxicology laboratories returned results.
The vial planted in Fiona’s bag was not an antidote.
It would create ARX markers inside Naomi’s blood and make it appear that she had been self-administering the experimental compound for years.
Vane intended to portray her as the true source of Toby’s exposure.
If she injected herself, every accusation against Mercer and Harborview could be redirected toward a grieving former wife conducting illegal treatment on her biological child.
Fiona stared at the report.
“He wanted Naomi to manufacture the evidence against herself.”
Detective Cole moved to detain Vane formally.
His office was empty.
He had escaped through the maintenance passage while Elise was captured.
His hospital credentials remained active at Northgate, Harborview, and the Mercer laboratory.
Fiona attempted to shut down the company systems.
A board override blocked her.
Someone had removed her as laboratory director and replaced her with Vane.
Elijah checked the corporate filing.
His own electronic signature authorized the change.
He had never approved it.
Vane controlled Elijah’s identity as completely as he controlled the substitutes.
Mercer Biodynamics issued a public statement blaming Naomi for unauthorized pediatric experimentation.
The statement included photographs of her childhood treatment, Micah’s death, Toby’s blood connection, and the planted vial.
The narrative was ready before the hospital emergency.
Naomi’s medical license was temporarily flagged pending review.
Dr. Vane appeared on a live news feed from an unknown location.
“We are deeply concerned that Dr. Brooks may have used her access to expose a child to a compound derived from her own abandoned research.”
Toby watched the silent television from his bed.
He looked at Naomi.
“Are they saying you hurt me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“I believe you.”
The trust of a four-year-old did not solve the investigation.
It reminded Naomi what the investigation was for.
Then Ivy’s ambulance arrived at Harborview.
Dana entered beside her under guard.
Ivy carried a small metal box she refused to surrender until Naomi came close.
“Mommy Doctor,” she whispered.
Inside the box was Micah’s original hospital bracelet.
Beneath it was a memory card.

The final video showed Micah alive twelve hours after the time listed on his death certificate.
