Chapter 10 - THE SECOND CASSANDRAThe woman outside Harborview did not attempt to enter.

She stood beneath a security camera long enough for her face to be recorded, then walked toward the parking structure.
Police followed.
They found Cassandra’s coat, handbag, and identification inside an abandoned car.
The substitute had changed clothing and disappeared into the hospital crowd.
Cassandra looked at the photograph.
“I know her.”
The woman was Elise Warren, a former nanny hired when Toby was six months old. She worked for the family only three weeks before leaving without explanation.
Elise had studied Cassandra’s routines, voice, signatures, and relationship with Toby.
She later appeared in the Project ARX files as Maternal Substitute C-2.
Vane trained her to replace Cassandra if the real mother refused the dosing plan.
Cassandra’s anger became fear.
“Was she ever alone with him?”
“Repeatedly,” Detective Cole said.
Security records showed Elise entering Toby’s preschool, pediatric clinic, and home under Cassandra’s identity.
Some of the microdoses may have been administered by Elise.
Cassandra had still given the evening bottle, followed secret instructions, and concealed the treatment from Elijah.
But the full exposure history belonged to more than one person.
Naomi checked Toby’s memories carefully.
“Did Mommy ever look different during medicine time?”
Toby nodded.
“Sometimes she smelled like flowers.”
Cassandra used unscented products because of his allergies.
Elise wore floral perfume.
Toby had been forced to accept two women as the same mother.
The confusion explained why he pointed toward Cassandra’s handbag but whispered about another dose. To him, “Mommy” had more than one face.
Ivy described a similar substitute at Northgate.
Sometimes Dana cared for her.
Sometimes another woman wore Dana’s voice and white coat.
The children had been raised inside interchangeable authority.
Vane called it continuity.
Naomi called it identity abuse.
Fiona traced Elise’s last badge access to the secured nurses’ station.
Naomi ran there.
The station appeared empty, but Toby’s paper chart had been removed from the locked cabinet.
The computer showed a completed transfer order to a psychiatric pediatric facility.
The justification claimed Naomi’s biological fixation created an abduction risk and Cassandra was medically unstable.
Elise intended to move Toby while every real parent appeared compromised.
Hospital staff would see a legal mother escorting a child under an authorized order.
The same method had removed Ivy repeatedly.
Naomi ordered all child transfers suspended.
Dr. Vane’s deputy challenged her.
“The order is legally valid.”
“It was signed by a woman using a stolen identity.”
“You cannot prove that yet.”
Toby’s smartwatch provided proof.
During the attempted home dosing, Cassandra’s voice appeared in two locations simultaneously—beside Toby and through a phone call from a grocery store security camera.
The mother in the house was Elise.
The current transfer papers carried the same biometric pattern as the false home signature.
Detective Cole froze the order.
Elise remained inside the hospital.
Security footage captured her entering the pediatric staff restroom.
Police opened it.
Empty.
A ceiling panel led into an old maintenance passage connecting the nurses’ station to the medical director’s office.
Inside Vane’s office, they found Elise removing a realistic facial prosthetic.
Without Cassandra’s face, she looked exhausted and frightened.
She surrendered.
“I was supposed to take Toby before Malcolm gave Fiona the final vial.”
Fiona stepped closer.
“What final vial?”
Elise looked at her.
“The one inside your handbag.”
Fiona’s company bag had remained beside the trauma room since she arrived.
Naomi opened it with gloved hands.
A sealed ARX bottle lay beneath the laptop.
Fiona had never seen it.
The bottle contained a different compound.
Not intended for Toby.
The patient code read:
N-3
Naomi’s childhood designation.
Someone had planted a dose designed for Naomi.
Elise looked toward the ceiling camera.
“Malcolm said she would take it willingly after the boy survived.”
Naomi felt cold move through her.
“How?”
“He said the antidote you made from your own blood was only the first half.”
The compound already circulating through Toby would eventually reactivate unless Naomi injected herself with the second formulation.
Vane had built a biological link between doctor and child.

Saving Toby permanently might require Naomi to become the next subject.
👉 Naomi faced the experiment’s final trap: refuse the drug and risk Toby’s relapse, or take it and surrender her own body to Project ARX.
