But mostly pride.
His lawyer advised:
Withdraw the notice without waiving divorce claims.
Move Victoria out.
Preserve reimbursement arguments.
Julian refused.
He told his lawyer:
“If I withdraw now, Nora wins.”
His lawyer answered:
“This is not a football game.”
Julian later admitted that exchange in deposition.
He believed leaving the house would prove his entire marriage had been governed by Nora’s family money.
He had spent years feeling like:
Thomas Hayes’s grandson-in-law.
The guy whose company got trust financing.
The husband living around inherited property.
I had not realized how much resentment accumulated.
Julian said:
“Every time we were at the lake, people called it Nora’s place. Never ours.”
Because it wasn’t ours.
Legally.
Emotionally, perhaps I had failed to make room for him.
But the solution was not changing locks.
