Chapter 3 - THREE DAYS EARLIERThe injuries that put me in the hospital did not happen in a mystery accident.

I went to the lake house because the smart-lock system sent an alert.
ADMINISTRATOR REMOVED.
Me.
Removed.
I called Julian.
No answer.
Then another notification:
NEW PRIMARY USER: J. MERCER
I drove north.
Stupid?
Maybe.
My lawyer later said:
“You should have called before going.”
I thought it was a marriage problem.
I did not yet understand it had become a property problem.
When I reached the lake house, Victoria’s Mercedes was in the drive.
Boxes filled the foyer.
Her clothes.
Books.
A framed portrait of Julian at age ten.
She had begun moving in.
I confronted them on the front landing.
“What are you doing?”
Julian answered:
“Solving the problem you refuse to solve.”
“What problem?”
“Mom’s housing.”
Victoria had sold her Boston condo six weeks earlier.
I had not known.
“Where is she supposed to live?”
Julian asked.
“I don’t know.”
“She sold because we agreed she could come here.”
“I never agreed.”
“You said we’d discuss it.”
“That is not agreement.”
He hated that distinction.
I tried to enter.
Julian blocked the doorway.
I told him to move.
Victoria said:
“Stop embarrassing yourself.”
Then I saw the new key pad.
New deadbolt.
I reached for my phone.
Julian grabbed my wrist.
My left wrist.
I pulled back.
“Don’t touch me.”
He reached for the phone.
I turned.
His hand hit my shoulder.
Hard.
I lost balance.
Three stone steps.
I fell sideways.
Left hand struck first.
My right knee twisted beneath me.
My face hit gravel at the bottom.
Everything after came in pieces.
Victoria shouting.
Julian saying:
“She slipped.”
My wrist bent wrong.
Blood from my lip.
A neighbor from across the lane running over.
Then ambulance lights.
Julian never called 911.
May you like
The neighbor did.
That mattered.
