Chapter 12 - THE EMAILThe first concrete sign of what Jessica knew came through something boring.
Expense reimbursement.
Derek and Jessica traveled together for work in April.
Chicago.
Two nights.
Commercial-hotel renovation project.
Their company produced expense records during the divorce because Derek’s compensation included travel reimbursements relevant to financial disclosure.
Rachel noticed a dinner charge for two on April 25.
Nothing illegal.
Nothing proof of an affair.
Then a reimbursement email from Jessica to Derek:
Can’t believe you’re really doing May 30. Final answer?
Derek replied:
Yes. Sarah knows.
Jessica:
And you two are still sleeping together?
Derek:
That’s complicated.
Jessica:
Then don’t act shocked if she changes her mind about another baby.
Rachel stared at me.
“That puts Jessica on notice that you and Derek were sexually active before the vasectomy.”
My skin prickled.
Not proof she knew I conceived then.
But important.
Jessica knew pre-surgery sex had happened.
She later encouraged Derek to treat pregnancy as impossible anyway.
