Chapter 15 - DEREK’S MOTHEREvelyn came to my house at twenty-two weeks.

I considered refusing.

Then let her in.

She brought nothing.

Good choice.

No flowers pretending we were past it.

She sat at the kitchen table.

“I owe you an apology.”

“Yes.”

She looked startled.

I was too tired to soften.

“I believed Derek.”

“I know.”

“I should have called you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought…”

She stopped.

“What?”

“That a man wouldn’t accuse his pregnant wife unless he was sure.”

I stared at her.

“That is a terrible standard.”

“I know that now.”

“Did Jessica encourage the family?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Yes.”

There.

“What did she say?”

“That Derek had been unhappy for a long time.”

“Anything about paternity?”

“She said the vasectomy made the timing very concerning.”

“Did she say she knew anything medically?”

“No.”

“Did she say she had feelings for him?”

“No.”

Evelyn started crying.

“I invited her to dinner because I thought she was helping my son through betrayal.”

“She was.”

Evelyn looked up.

I continued:

“The problem is that the betrayal may not have been mine.”
