Chapter 7 - THE FIRST FAMILY DINNER WITHOUT MEDerek’s mother, Evelyn, invited his siblings to dinner the Sunday after he left.

I was not invited.
I learned about it from his sister Lauren.
Lauren called afterward.
“I think you need to know what he’s saying.”
My stomach tightened.
“Go ahead.”
Derek told them I was approximately six weeks pregnant.
That his vasectomy had been five weeks before the positive test.
That he had “medical confirmation” the procedure succeeded.
No one asked whether medical confirmation came after conception.
No one asked how pregnancy dating worked.
Evelyn cried.
She said:
“I always trusted Sarah.”
Past tense.
Derek’s brother Mark told him to get a DNA test.
Reasonable.
Jessica attended the dinner.
That part was not reasonable.
“What was Jessica doing there?”
Lauren hesitated.
“Mom said Derek didn’t want to come alone.”
I closed my eyes.
“Was she sitting next to him?”
“Yes.”
“Did she say anything?”
“She said she’d been helping him through it.”
Through my alleged affair.
Lauren lowered her voice.
“Sarah, are they together?”
May you like
“I don’t know.”
That was my first honest answer.
