Chapter 19 - WHAT DEREK ADMITTEDWe met with our lawyers present.

I did not trust myself alone with him.

Derek looked exhausted.

I was twenty-seven weeks pregnant.

He said:

“I knew there was a chance.”

I did not answer.

“I told myself there wasn’t.”

“Why?”

He rubbed his hands.

“Because if the baby was mine—”

He stopped.

“What?”

“I’d have to decide whether I left because our marriage was broken or because Jessica made leaving feel easier.”

“Jessica did not make you pack.”

“I know.”

“Jessica did not tell your mother I cheated. You did.”

“I know.”

“Jessica did not bring herself into Dr. Evans’s room. You brought her.”

“I know.”

He started crying.

I felt almost nothing.

Then he said:

“I wanted the test to make me right.”

That was probably the most honest thing he ever told me.
