Chapter 26 - TWO YEARS AFTER THE ULTRASOUNDTwo years after Dr. Evans turned that monitor toward Derek, we returned to her office.

Not for another pregnancy.

I was not pregnant.

Derek and I were not reconciling.

Nora had been invited to participate in a developmental follow-up study connected to the practice’s maternal-health program.

I brought her.

Derek met us there because the appointment overlapped his parenting time.

Nora was twenty-two months old.

She ran directly toward the ultrasound-room hallway because toddlers enjoy testing fate.

I caught her.

“No.”

Derek laughed.

“She has your speed.”

“She has your inability to respect closed doors.”

“Fair.”

Dr. Evans saw us near reception.

“Sarah.”

She smiled at Nora.

“This must be the famous one.”

Derek looked embarrassed.

I laughed.

“Unfortunately.”

Dr. Evans shook Derek’s hand.

No sermon.

No judgment.

Medical professionals do not need to become characters in your divorce forever.

As we left, Derek said:

“I never thanked her.”

“For what?”

“For stopping me from making an even bigger fool of myself.”

“She was doing her job.”

“I know.”

Then he looked at Nora.

“I’m glad she did it.”

I did not answer.

Some statements did not need forgiveness attached.
