Chapter 11 - MY OWN CARELESSNESSDaniel showed me annual account summaries.

I had received them.

By email.

I had not opened most.

That mattered.

Not legally enough to authorize fraud if fraud occurred.

But personally.

I had delegated.

Ignored.

Assumed.

At one meeting, Daniel said:

“You signed annual financial statements showing aggregate family-support expenses.”

“I didn’t see Bonnie’s card.”

“No, because user-level detail was in supplemental schedules.”

“Which I didn’t read.”

“Correct.”

I stared at the table.

“I feel stupid.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Being inattentive is not consent to deception.”

“But it made it easier.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

He did not soften it.

Good.

“I want every transaction.”

“You’ll get them.”

“No matter how embarrassing.”

May you like

“Especially those.”

That became our rule.
