Chapter 16 - BONNIE COMES TO MY OFFICEBonnie appeared at Parkwell’s lobby without an appointment.

Security called me.

I should have refused.

I didn’t.

We met in a glass conference room.

She looked smaller without a family audience.

“You’re destroying everyone.”

I stared.

“I froze an account funded by my income.”

“Mason may lose his business.”

“Why?”

“Because you stopped payments.”

“If Mason’s business requires fake invoices from me to survive, it was already in trouble.”

Her face hardened.

“Gemma can’t afford her custody case.”

“That is sad. It does not make me her bank.”

“Harold is sick.”

“He is not too sick to renovate a kitchen with money he told me was for taxes.”

She flinched.

Good.

Then:

“You have more than enough.”

I sat back.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The part where you think the amount I have determines whether you need permission.”

Bonnie’s eyes filled.

“I treated you like my daughter.”

“No.”

I said it quietly.

“You treated me like a resource.”

She stood.

“You’re going to regret choosing money over family.”

I looked at her.

“I chose consent.”

May you like

She left.

For the first time, that word felt more important than family.
