Chapter 8 - ANDREW COMES HOMEAndrew was released the next morning under standard conditions and stayed with Mason.

A temporary protective order limited contact.
He communicated through his attorney.
Then, four days later, he requested to retrieve clothing.
Police standby.
He entered the house looking older.
The dining-room wall still had a faint streak where my shoulder hit.
Broken china gone.
Rain gone.
The silence felt worse.
He packed.
I stood in the hallway.
Officer nearby.
Andrew finally said:
“I didn’t know about everything.”
I almost laughed.
“What is everything?”
“Mom’s spending.”
“How much did you know?”
“Some.”
“HM Property Services?”
His hands stopped moving.
There.
“Andrew.”
“It was Dad’s company.”
“I know.”
“He needed income.”
“So you paid him ninety-six thousand dollars from my account?”
“From our account.”
“No.”
“Cadence—”
“No. My distributions funded that account.”
“We’re married.”
“Marriage doesn’t turn my separate business distributions into your parents’ salary by incantation.”
He looked away.
“I thought you were okay helping.”
“Helping is not fake invoices.”
“They weren’t fake.”
“What service did Harold provide?”
Silence.
Officer shifted.
Andrew zipped his bag.
“I need a lawyer before we talk about that.”

Good instinct.
Terrible marriage.
