Chapter 12 - GEMMA’S MONEYGemma had received $38,600 over two years.

I knew about roughly $22,000.

Divorce attorney.

Rent.

Therapy for her daughter.

The rest?

Direct transfers from Family Support labeled:

Housing assistance.

Emergency childcare.

Medical support.

Gemma cried when Daniel questioned her.

Then called me.

“I thought you knew.”

“How?”

“Andrew sent them.”

“Did you ask him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That you’d rather help than watch me struggle.”

That sounded like me.

Which made it worse.

“Did Bonnie ever ask you to submit fake receipts?”

Silence.

“Gemma.”

“One.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“A daycare receipt.”

“How much?”

“Four thousand eight hundred.”

“Why?”

“I needed money for the custody evaluator. Bonnie said it would be easier if I labeled it childcare because the support account had categories.”

“Did Andrew know?”

“I sent it to him.”

“Did he approve it?”

“Yes.”

There.

My husband was not merely unaware.

He had converted dishonesty into family administration.
