Chapter 10 - The photograph
One photograph became unexpectedly important.
A guest named Lauren had taken a picture of Grace wearing Owen’s crown approximately seven minutes before I found her.
Grace was laughing.
Owen stood beside her.
His arm around her shoulders.
Natalie was in the background.
Looking directly at them.
Not smiling.
Could a photograph prove intent?
No.
But metadata established timing.
Then Lauren remembered Natalie saying:
“This is Owen’s birthday, not Grace’s photo shoot.”
Lauren had assumed she was joking.
Two other adults remembered similar comments.
Again:
No secret plan.
A visible grievance.
Natalie’s attorney argued adults make sarcastic remarks at chaotic children’s parties.
True.
The prosecution looked at the whole sequence.
Statements before.
Physical restraint.
Smack.
Marks.
Witnesses.
