Chapter 20 - Diane apologizes to Owen first
My mother apologized to Owen before she apologized to Grace.
At first, that bothered me.
Then I understood.
She had failed him too.
He had stood in a hallway and told adults what happened while his grandmother remained silent.
Diane met him with Jason present.
She said:
“I should have been the adult who spoke before you had to.”
Good.
Owen looked at her.
“Were you scared of Mom?”
Diane’s face changed.
“Yes.”
An eight-year-old should not need that answer.
Still, honesty.
“Why?”
“I was scared she would get angrier.”
Owen said:
“She did anyway.”

Then:
“You should’ve helped Grace.”
“I know.”
He nodded.
No hug.
