Chapter 16 - Natalie’s birthday rulebook

During discovery and family therapy, something almost funny emerged.
Natalie had a notes document for the birthday.
Schedule.
11:00 setup.
12:30 kids arrive.
1:15 games.
2:00 pizza.
2:45 gifts.
3:15 cake.
3:25 crown photo.
3:40 free play.
The crown photo.
That was why she cared.
She had planned a picture of Owen wearing the handmade crown beside the cake.
By the time 3:25 arrived, the crown was torn.
He had given it away.
Grace wore it.
Children had reorganized the schedule by existing.
Natalie had not adapted.
Her therapist asked:
“Why did the photograph matter?”
Natalie answered:
“Because birthdays happen once.”
Then:
“Because I wanted one nice picture.”
Then eventually:
“Because if the picture looked chaotic, I felt like I had failed.”
There.
Control was not only arrogance.
Anxiety.
Perfectionism.
Status.
Old sibling rivalry.

Still no excuse.
But a real mechanism.
