Chapter 11 - Grace becomes afraid of bathrooms

For six weeks, Grace would not close a bathroom door.
At home.
Preschool.
Restaurants.
If I closed one accidentally while helping her, she panicked.
“Open!”
So I opened it.
Her therapist advised:
Do not force the door.
Do not turn every bathroom into trauma theater either.
Give choice where safe.
At preschool, staff allowed the stall door partly open with a teacher nearby until she became comfortable again.
Slowly:
Half-closed.
Then closed.
No ceremony.
Her cheek swelling resolved in days.
Arm bruising faded within two weeks.
The emotional memory stayed longer.
One night she asked:
“Was I bad for wearing Owen’s crown?”
“No.”
“Even if Aunt Natalie said?”
“No.”
“Why did she say I steal?”
I thought carefully.
“Sometimes adults get angry about things that aren’t really about children.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“No.”

Good.
Children should not have to understand every adult failure.
