Chapter 24 - Owen’s crown

Owen had kept the damaged crown.

I learned that two years after the incident.

It was in a box under his bed.

Tape across one tear.

Silver stickers peeling.

Jason asked:

“Why do you still have this?”

Owen shrugged.

“Grace liked it.”

Then:

“It reminds me I told.”

Jason cried later.

Not in front of him.

Good.

At nine, Owen gave the crown back to Grace.

She laughed.

“It’s ugly.”

“It was always ugly.”

They argued.

Normal cousins.

Grace asked:

“Do I have to keep it?”

“No.”

She threw it away.

Owen did not mind.

That might have been the healthiest thing anyone did with the object.

No museum.

No framed evidence.

Paper went into trash.

The truth stayed without needing a relic.
