Chapter 12 - MY LEADING QUESTIONI made a worse mistake with Sophie five days after the interview.

We were coloring.

She drew a bathtub.

I froze.

Then asked:

“Did Daddy give you sleepy juice every time?”

The second the words left my mouth, I knew.

Leading.

Assuming.

She nodded.

Then said:

“Maybe.”

I stopped.

Called Detective Lopez myself.

“I messed up.”

She asked exactly what I said.

I told her.

No softening.

She documented it.

The defense later used it.

Erin was implanting ideas.

Erin wanted Mark punished.

Erin asked suggestive questions.

My one bad question did not erase the earlier forensic interview.

But it gave them material.

I hated myself for that.

The interviewer later told me:

“Parents do this because they’re terrified. The important thing is you stopped and disclosed it.”

Not absolution.

Context.
