His father made him sleep in a dark garage once when he was eight because he was afraid of storms.
His mother called it “building resilience.”
Mark told me that story while we were dating.
He laughed.
I said:
“That’s awful.”
He said:
“It worked.”
Did it?
He still hated thunderstorms.
He simply stopped telling people.
That should have taught both of us more.
After Sophie’s bath fear began, Mark saw himself in her.
Instead of protecting her from what had happened to him, he recreated the logic.
Fear must be defeated.
Crying must not control adults.
Secrets become proof of toughness.
People repeat what wounded them sometimes not because they loved it, but because admitting it was wrong would force them to grieve their own childhood.
