Chapter 24 - MY OWN APOLOGYI owed Sophie one too.

Not for Mark’s choices.
For mine.
The kick.
The questions.
Missing signs.
One night I told her:
“When I came into the bathroom, I kicked Daddy.”
“I know.”
“That scared you.”
“Yes.”
“I was trying to keep you safe, but I also got very angry.”
“He fell in the water.”
“Yes.”
She smiled slightly.
“Big splash.”
I almost smiled too.
Then:
“I should have focused on getting you out safely.”
“Did you say sorry to Daddy?”
Hard question.
“Yes.”
I had.
During a mediated session.
Not for stopping him.
For unnecessary force beyond what I believed was required.
Sophie thought.
“Daddy said sorry to me.”
“Yes.”
“Everybody says sorry.”
“Sometimes everybody has something.”

She accepted that.
A family can survive mixed responsibility better when adults stop ranking apologies like medals.
