Age appropriate.
I read it first.
Sophie, I made bath time scary when it was my job to make you feel safe. I made you stay when you wanted to get out. I made rules about crying that were not fair. I also gave you medicine without talking to Mom or your doctor the right way. That was wrong. None of it was because you were bad.
Good.
Then:
You never have to keep a secret about being scared.
That sentence nearly broke me.
Sophie was six.
She asked me to read it twice.
Then:
“Daddy said sorry.”
“Yes.”
“Is he good now?”
Children want moral software updates.
I said:
“He’s working on making better choices.”
“Do I have to take baths at his house?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Not unless you and the adults responsible for keeping you safe agree it’s okay.”
She nodded.
