Chapter 14 - The auditor finds the source
The signature investigation took seven weeks.
Not seven dramatic minutes.
The strongest evidence was not metadata.
It was process.
Denise Hall, Arturo’s former executive assistant, testified to special committee counsel that Arturo asked her to prepare the consent.
She sent him the unsigned draft.
She never received it back through our normal e-sign system.
Instead Arturo emailed her a flattened PDF and wrote:
Handled directly with Elena. Use attached.
Denise did not question.
Why?
Arturo was chairman.
Founder.
He had done informal approvals for decades.
She uploaded the PDF to the transaction folder.
Later Arturo personally submitted it to the bank portal.
Then forensic review found the signature image matched not just the general shape of my signature but pixel-for-pixel a signature appearing on an unrelated charitable sponsorship form I had executed sixteen months earlier.
Same tiny compression artifact.
Same accidental gray mark beneath the final letter.
That did not prove whose hand copied it.
It proved the signature on the advance consent was an image reuse, not a fresh signature.
The charitable form existed in VGD’s shared archive.
Who accessed it?
Audit logs from our document-management system showed Arturo’s account opened the file on February 12 at 5:58 p.m.
Then the unsigned consent.
Then the executed PDF appeared.
Could someone else have used his account?
Possible.
Was there evidence?
No.
Arturo’s counsel eventually stopped claiming I signed.
His position shifted.
He believed my previous general approval of family-property support gave him authority to complete documentation administratively.
