Chapter 21 - Lucía finishes school

Lucía almost quit graduate school.
Not because tuition disappeared completely.
Because shame convinced her continuing would look like entitlement.
I told her:
“Finish.”
She stared.
“You just stopped paying.”
“Yes.”
“Then how?”
“Like other adults.”
Work.
Loans.
Scholarships.
Budget.
She laughed despite herself.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“Less than you think.”
She took a part-time consulting contract.
Reduced course load for one semester.
Used federal student loans.
Applied for an employer tuition benefit when she changed jobs.
She finished eighteen months later.
I attended graduation.
Why?
She was my sister.
We had repaired enough.
No giant bouquet.
No paid celebratory trip.
I brought flowers from a grocery store.
She looked at them.
“Budget cut?”
“Deep austerity.”
She laughed.
Then hugged me.
Our repayment agreement continued.
Two hundred seventy-five dollars per month.
Sometimes late.
She told me before it was late.
That mattered more.

Financial help became boring.
Exactly what it should be.
