Chapter 9 - Sofia tells the whole story
Sofia’s story became clearer in a family therapy session Lucía arranged.
Not court.
No police.
The financial audit had nothing to do with Sofia.
Good.
Keep systems separate.
Sofia said Arturo began talking about the prank three weeks before Noah’s birthday.
Why?
Because I had refused to restore his personal reimbursements while the audit continued.
At Sunday lunch, Arturo complained:
“Elena thinks she runs the whole family because she pays for everything.”
Sofia laughed.
Teenagers laugh when adults say inappropriate things and treat them as inclusion.
He told her:
“Your aunt needs to learn what happens when she makes every event about her rules.”
Then:
“At Noah’s birthday, we should knock her down a peg.”
Sofia initially thought:
Pie in Elena’s face.
Balloon prank.
Something ordinary.
The Friday before the party, Arturo changed it.
“When Noah goes for the candles, dump this over the cake.”
Sofia asked:
“What’s in it?”
“Mud.”
She said:
“That’s mean.”
Arturo answered:
“He’ll survive. Your aunt will lose her mind. That’s the point.”
Then he offered two hundred dollars.
Sofia accepted.
Why?
“Because Grandpa never gives me money unless I do something.”
That sentence changed Lucía’s face.
Sofia continued:
“I thought if he was paying, Mom knew.”
Lucía said:
“I didn’t.”
“You knew there was a prank.”
“Yes.”
“You laughed when he said Aunt Elena needed to get humbled.”
Lucía looked down.
“Yes.”
Sofia began crying.
“I thought Noah would laugh after.”
“Why?”
“Grandpa said boys need to learn not to cry over stupid things.”
There.
Noah was being used for two adult lessons at once.
Punish Elena.
Toughen Noah.
Arturo loved his grandson.
I believe that.
