Chapter 1

She Chose Her Feverish Daughter Over His Family Dinner.
Sarah Bennett sat on the dining-room floor with her six-year-old daughter shaking in her arms.
Her cheek burned from the hit that had just landed.
Lily’s pink pajamas clung to her small body with sweat, but she trembled like the room was freezing.
Around them, dinner guests sat silent at the table.
Red wine had spilled across the white tablecloth.
Brian stood above Sarah, pointing down at her like she had embarrassed him instead of trying to save their child.
Behind him, Donna Bennett glared in her burgundy dress, furious that Sarah had ruined the family dinner.
Lily pressed her hot face into Sarah’s sweater.
“Mommy… I’m so cold.”
That was the moment Sarah stopped being afraid.
She rose carefully with Lily in her arms and reached for her purse and car keys on the table.
Brian’s jaw tightened.
Sarah looked straight at him.
“Her fever is one hundred and four.”
Brian stepped between her and the doorway.
“You’re not leaving this house.”
Donna nodded behind him, certain Sarah would obey.
Sarah shifted Lily higher against her shoulder.
“Watch me.”
She walked around Brian instead of fighting him.
One teenage guest raised her phone and kept recording.
Sarah reached the front doorway, dialed her father, and stepped into the hall.
The call connected.
Robert Hale’s calm voice came through the phone.
“I’m on my way.”

Behind her, Brian’s face went pale as his own phone began vibrating again and again.
