Chapter 2

Dinner had been Donna’s idea.
It was always Donna’s idea.
A Sunday family gathering.
A perfect table.
Perfect plates.
Perfect wine.
Perfect behavior.
Sarah had spent the afternoon checking Lily’s temperature while Brian told her to stop hovering.
“She has a cold,” he said.
Sarah placed the thermometer on the counter.
“One hundred and three point eight.”
Brian did not even look at it.
“My mother already drove two hours. We are not canceling dinner.”
By the time the guests arrived, Lily was curled on the couch, cheeks flushed, eyes watery, whispering that her bones hurt.
Sarah wanted to leave then.
Brian blocked the hallway with his body.
“Don’t make a scene.”
Donna arrived carrying dessert and judgment.
“She looks fine,” Donna said after glancing at Lily for less than two seconds. “Children run hot.”
Sarah held Lily’s hand and tried to stay calm.
Then Lily’s temperature reached one hundred and four.
That was when Sarah grabbed her purse.
Brian followed her into the dining room.
Donna said, “You are not dragging a child to the ER just to prove you’re dramatic.”
Sarah answered, “I’m her mother.”
Brian’s face changed.
Not because he cared about Lily’s fever.
May you like
Because Sarah had contradicted him in front of his family.
