Chapter 9

Sarah stepped onto the porch with Lily in her arms.

Cold air struck them both.

Lily shivered harder.

Sarah wrapped her sweater more tightly around the child and hurried toward the car.

Behind her, Brian followed as far as the doorway.

He did not cross it.

Not with Emily behind him.

Not with the guests watching.

Not with his phone vibrating again in his palm.

“Sarah,” he called, quieter now.

She opened the car door.

He said, “We can talk about this.”

She buckled Lily carefully into the back seat.

“No.”

“You’re overreacting.”

Sarah looked at Lily’s flushed face.

Then back at him.

“No.”

Brian glanced down at his phone again.

His lips parted.

Whatever he saw there made him step back.

Donna appeared behind him, her face tight with fear she tried to disguise as outrage.

Sarah closed Lily’s door gently.

Then she looked toward the house one last time.

Not with fear.

With clarity.

The dinner table, the spilled wine, the plates, the guests, the recording, the call.

All of it remained behind her.

Lily needed help now.
