Chapter 4

The teenage girl was Brian’s niece, Emily.
Sixteen years old.
Usually silent at family dinners.
Usually ignored unless Donna wanted someone to pass plates.
Emily had watched too much over the years.
The way Brian spoke to Sarah.
The way Donna smiled when Sarah lowered her eyes.
The way Lily became quiet whenever voices rose.
Emily had never recorded before.
She was afraid of Brian too.
But when Lily whispered, “Mommy… I’m so cold,” something changed in her face.
She lowered her phone beneath the table at first.
Then raised it just enough.
Brian did not notice.
Donna did.
Her eyes narrowed.
Emily’s hand trembled, but she kept recording.
Sarah saw her from the corner of her eye.
She did not ask for help.
She did not need to.
The recording meant there would be one version of the night Brian could not edit.
Sarah stood with Lily in her arms.
The room waited for her to apologize.
That was the role they knew.
Sarah apologizing.
Sarah smoothing things over.
Sarah promising not to embarrass anyone.
Instead, she picked up the car keys.
Brian moved toward the doorway.
Donna’s face sharpened with satisfaction.
They expected Sarah to stop.
May you like
But fever had burned away the last thread of obedience.
