Chapter 10

No slap was shown.
No hospital diagnosis was revealed.
No final legal consequence unfolded.
No custody decision was made.
The scene ended with Sarah Bennett standing beside the open car door, her feverish daughter safely buckled inside, while Brian remained frozen at the entrance of the suburban Illinois home.
His anger had vanished.
In its place was fear.
His phone vibrated again in his hand, glowing with unreadable alerts and calls.
Donna stood behind him in her burgundy dress, suddenly aware that the teenage girl’s recording had captured more than a family disagreement.
Inside the dining room, the red wine still stained the tablecloth.
The plates sat untouched.
The guests no longer pretended this was normal.
Sarah held her phone close to her chest.
Robert Hale’s voice stayed in her ears.
“I’m on my way.”
That was all she needed.
Not permission.
Not revenge.
Not a promise that everything would be fixed before the night ended.
Just proof that someone was coming who Brian could not intimidate, dismiss, or silence.
Sarah wiped one tear from her reddened cheek.
May you like
Then she got into the car beside Lily.
This time, when Brian said her name, she did not turn back.
