Chapter 6

The front hallway felt colder than the dining room.

Sarah welcomed it.

Lily buried her face deeper into Sarah’s shoulder.

“Mommy, I’m tired.”

“I know, baby.”

“Are we in trouble?”

Sarah almost broke.

She had heard Lily ask that too many times.

After spilled juice.

After dropped toys.

After Brian’s raised voice.

After Donna’s visits.

“No,” Sarah whispered. “You are sick. We are getting help.”

“My head hurts.”

“I know.”

Sarah set her purse against her hip, kept Lily supported with one arm, and pulled out her phone with the other.

Her fingers wanted to shake.

She would not let them.

She could call 911.

She could call the pediatric ER.

She could call a neighbor.

But first, she called her father.

Robert Hale had told her one thing when she married Brian.

“If you ever need me, do not explain first. Just call.”

Sarah had been too proud for years.

Too embarrassed.

Too convinced she should be able to fix her own marriage.

Now her daughter was burning against her chest.

Pride was useless.

The phone rang once.

Then Robert answered.

Sarah could barely speak.

“Dad.”
