Chapter 5

Brian spoke quietly when he threatened.
That made it worse.
“You’re not leaving this house.”
The guests heard him.
They pretended not to understand.
Donna stood behind him like a judge.
Sarah looked at the doorway.
Then at Lily.
The child’s lips had gone pale.
Her body shook against Sarah’s chest.
Sarah remembered the nurse’s advice from the pediatrician’s line months ago.
High fever with chills.
Lethargy.
Trouble staying awake.
Do not wait if your instinct says go.
Her instinct was screaming.
Brian’s pride could wait.
Donna’s dinner could wait.
The plates could sit cold forever.
Sarah adjusted Lily’s weight and met Brian’s eyes.
“Watch me.”
She did not shove him.
Did not scream.
Did not give him a physical fight he could use later.
She moved around him.
Slow.
Careful.
Determined.
Brian hesitated because the room was watching.
Because Emily’s phone was raised now.
Because even Donna could not slap a camera out of a teenager’s hand without admitting there was something to hide.
Sarah reached the front hall.
Behind her, Brian said her name in a warning tone.
She ignored it.
