Donna tried one last time.
“Sarah,” she said sharply. “Think about what you’re doing.”
Sarah turned.
“I am.”
“You’re humiliating this family.”
“My daughter has a fever of one hundred and four.”
“Children get fevers.”
“Then you should have no problem explaining why you tried to stop me from taking her to the ER.”
Donna’s mouth closed.
Emily’s phone remained steady.
The guests around the table shifted uncomfortably.
Some looked ashamed.
Some looked afraid of being included in whatever happened next.
Brian stepped forward.
“Sarah, don’t make this worse.”
She looked at him then.
At the navy shirt.
The clenched jaw.
The hand that had pointed at her minutes after striking her.
“Worse for who?”
He did not answer.
Lily whimpered softly.
That ended the conversation for Sarah.
She turned toward the open door.
Outside, winter daylight washed the porch in gray light.
The car was in the driveway.
The hospital was twenty minutes away.
Robert was on his way.
Emily was recording.
