Chapter 3

Sarah had learned Brian’s anger had rules.

Never disagree in front of guests.

Never question Donna.

Never make him look like less than the head of the house.

Never choose anyone else over his pride.

Not even their daughter.

At first, he controlled with disappointment.

Then silence.

Then accusations.

Then slammed doors.

Then gripping her wrist too tightly when she walked away.

After every incident, Donna found a way to make it Sarah’s fault.

“You provoke him.”

“You know how stressed he is.”

“A wife should calm her husband, not challenge him.”

Sarah used to argue.

Then she stopped.

Not because she agreed.

Because arguing gave them more words to twist.

But Lily’s fever was not a marital debate.

It was heat burning through a child’s body.

Sarah held Lily against her chest and felt how weak she had become.

That fear broke through every rule Brian had built.

When Sarah said they were leaving, Brian’s hand moved faster than the room could process.

The guests froze after the sound.

Sarah touched her cheek.

Lily began crying.

Brian looked shocked for only half a second.

Then he pointed at Sarah like she had caused the problem by reacting.

That was when the teenage girl at the table lifted her phone.

Quietly.

Carefully.

And started recording.
