Chapter 2 - What the police found

Luke spoke first.

“What house?”

Nobody answered.

He already knew.

Adrian looked toward the door.

Two uniformed officers stood outside the room.

Not there to arrest anyone that second.

There because I had requested hospital security and because Detective Reeves had coordinated the timing of the search.

Celina stepped toward my bed.

“What did you tell them?”

Adrian moved between us.

“Mrs. Bennett, please remain where you are.”

Celina looked offended.

“I am her mother-in-law.”

“That is not legal authority.”

Luke said:

“Clover, what did you do?”

I almost laughed.

Three days earlier I had been on a kitchen floor with a numb foot while he invented a fall.

Now he was asking what I had done.

The phone remained on speaker.

I said:

“What did you find?”

Detective Reeves answered:

“The document packet you described.”

Luke’s expression changed.

Not at the rolling pin.

Not at the recording.

The documents.

That told Adrian something immediately.

He glanced at me.

The detective continued:

“There’s also a signed spousal guaranty in Mr. Bennett’s office.”

My heart slowed.

“Signed by who?”

“Your name is on it.”

Luke said:

“This is absurd.”

Detective Reeves heard.

“Is Luke Bennett present?”

Adrian answered:

“Yes.”

“Then I’m not discussing additional evidentiary details over speaker.”

Correct.

I understood.

The call was not a courtroom reveal.

It was confirmation.

Adrian said:

“Detective, thank you.”

She added:

“Clover, an officer will remain at the hospital until we finish here. We’ll speak later.”

The line disconnected.

Celina looked at Luke.

“What guaranty?”

He did not answer.

That was the moment she became frightened.

Not when my recording played.

Not when Adrian appeared.

When she realized Luke had kept something from her too.

Barron whispered:

“Luke.”

Luke turned on him.

“Stop saying my name like that.”

Adrian opened the hospital-room door.

“I think this visit is over.”

Luke looked at me.

“You set this up.”

“No.”

“You invited us here.”

I had.

Through a text from my nurse’s station after Adrian approved.

You said you wanted to talk. Come at three.

I had not lied.

I wanted them to hear the recording in front of a witness.

But the police search had been scheduled independently.

Luke said:

“You’re trying to destroy me.”

I answered:

“No.”

My voice surprised me.

Calm.

May you like

“I’m trying to stop you from deciding what happened to me.”

For once, he had no answer.
