Chapter 7 - Barron’s first truthful sentence
Barron called me two days after the hospital confrontation.
I did not answer.
He left a voicemail.
“I should have called 911.”
Nothing else.
That was the first truthful sentence anyone from Luke’s family gave me.
I sent it to Adrian.
He said:
“Preserve it.”
“Can I answer?”
“You can. I recommend you don’t yet.”
I listened.
For once.
Barron had not struck me.
Had not blocked the door.
Had not written the false story.
But his passivity was not neutral.
The recording captured him saying:
“She needs a doctor.”
Then allowing Luke to shut him down.
Later:
“Don’t.”
Then nothing.
When Luke and Celina went upstairs, Barron followed.
He did not remain.
Did not hand me my phone.
Did not call from another room.
Twenty-six minutes passed before I called emergency services myself.
Barron later said:
“I thought Luke would come back down.”
Maybe.
He also thought challenging his son would create a fight.
