Chapter 26 - What obedience meant
I spent years believing Luke wanted a traditional marriage.
That phrase had hidden too much.
Traditional can mean:
Shared responsibilities.
Family rituals.
Different roles freely chosen.
Nothing inherently abusive.
Luke used the word when he meant hierarchy.
His version of obedience had no formal rulebook.
It appeared only when I disagreed.
When I agreed, we were:
Partners.
When I said no, suddenly marriage required:
Sacrifice.
Respect.
Loyalty.
Unity.
He did not demand I quit working.
He liked my paycheck.
He did not forbid friends.
He disliked the friends who challenged him.
He did not control every purchase.
He became angry when money moved outside his visibility.
Control does not always arrive as a cage.
Sometimes it arrives as a relationship where one person’s no must always justify itself and the other person’s demand does not.
The broken leg was the loudest moment.
The philosophy came first.
That was what I carried forward.
