Chapter 1

My Husband’s Family Made Me Serve Their Feast Like Staff—Then One Envelope Revealed They Were About to Lose the Mansion.

Elena Morales stood in the Newport mansion ballroom with a steak plate in both hands and a stained white apron tied over her damp blouse.

Around the long dining table, Daniel Hale’s relatives laughed beneath the chandeliers while eating the feast she had cooked alone.

At the head of the table, Margaret Hale’s ornate chair sat empty.

Untouched place setting.

Untouched champagne glass.

A silence no one wanted to explain.

Vanessa Hale pointed toward the kitchen entrance.

“Staff eat in the back.”

Soft laughter moved around the table.

Daniel stepped forward, but he did not defend his wife.

He looked down at his plate.

“Elena, don’t make a scene.”

Something inside Elena’s face broke.

Then steadied.

She placed the steak plate on the table.

Slowly, she untied the stained apron and removed it, revealing the fitted black wrap dress beneath.

The laughter faded.

Elena folded the apron neatly over Margaret’s empty chair, removed a sealed cream envelope from the pocket, and placed it beside the untouched champagne glass.

Looking directly at Daniel, she said:

“Enjoy dessert.”

A red indicator light blinked above the dining-room doorway.

Daniel saw it and stiffened.

Vanessa snatched the envelope, but headlights swept across the windows before she could open it.

“What did you do?”

A doorbell echoed through the mansion.

Two officers and a female attorney appeared near the entrance.

Elena stepped forward.

“By midnight, none of you will own this house.”

Upstairs, a muted medical alert began sounding.
