Chapter 7

Vanessa laughed.

It came out too sharp.

Too late.

“You are insane.”

No one joined her.

She looked around the table, searching for support from people who had laughed at Elena minutes earlier.

Now they avoided her eyes.

That was the thing about wealthy cowards.

They laugh with cruelty when it feels safe.

They become silent when paperwork appears.

Daniel stood slowly.

“Vanessa, don’t open it.”

Elena looked at him.

“So you do know.”

His face tightened.

“I know enough to know we should talk privately.”

“Now you want privacy?”

The words struck him.

Vanessa looked from Daniel to Elena.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel did not answer.

The attorney remained in the doorway, tablet held close, watching but not speaking yet.

The officers waited behind her.

Professional.

Still.

No completed arrest.

No removal.

No final legal outcome.

Only witnesses.

The hidden camera above the doorway held its red glow.

Elena turned toward the seated guests.

“You all heard her call me staff.”

No one denied it.

“You all watched Daniel tell me not to make a scene.”

Silence.

“You all ate the food I cooked while Margaret’s chair sat empty.”

That made several guests glance toward the staircase.

Then, from upstairs, a muted medical alert sounded.

Soft.

Rhythmic.

Terrifying.

Daniel’s face drained.
