Chapter 4

Margaret’s chair remained empty for the first thirty minutes.
No one toasted her.
No one asked whether she was well.
No one sent food upstairs.
They simply ate beneath the chandeliers and pretended the birthday dinner still belonged to the woman whose place setting sat untouched.
Elena noticed everything.
Vanessa sitting closest to the head of the table like she had inherited the room already.
Daniel avoiding the empty chair.
Relatives laughing too loudly whenever footsteps passed upstairs.
The champagne glass beside Margaret’s plate catching golden light without being lifted.
An empty chair can accuse a room.
This one did.
Elena carried the steak plate from the kitchen with both hands.
Her apron was stained from sauce and smoke.
Her hair had slipped loose from its bun.
Her eyes still burned from earlier tears.
Vanessa looked her up and down with satisfaction.
That was the moment Elena understood the cruelty was the point.
Not the food.
Not tradition.
Not family unity.
Humiliation.
Vanessa wanted Elena seen as staff while the Hales sat as owners.
So Elena let the whole room see.
She stood in the center of the ballroom.
Let the apron show.
Let the tears dry on her face.
Let the guests laugh.
And when the laughter reached its comfortable peak, she placed the steak plate down.
Then untied the apron.

The room quieted before anyone knew why.
