Chapter 2

Elena had cooked the entire birthday feast because Daniel asked her to.
Not kindly.
Carefully.
The way he always asked when his family had already decided something for him.
“Mom wants tradition,” he said that morning.
“Margaret asked me to cook?”
Daniel adjusted his cufflinks.
“Vanessa said it would mean more if you handled it yourself.”
Elena knew what that meant.
No caterer.
No hired chef.
No staff in the kitchen to witness what the family said when the ballroom doors closed.
She cooked anyway.
Not because she was obedient.
Because Margaret Hale had requested one private thing from her two nights before.
“Wear the apron they give you,” Margaret had whispered from her upstairs suite. “And keep the envelope close.”
Elena did not understand everything.
Only enough.
Margaret was ill.
The family was circling.
Daniel had become colder.
Vanessa had become louder.
And the Newport mansion, the oceanfront home everyone called “the Hale estate,” had secrets buried deeper than the wine cellar.
So Elena tied the apron.
Roasted the steaks.
Set the crystal glasses.
Arranged the white flowers.
Carried plates while relatives who had never washed a dish in their lives judged the temperature of the food.
By the time Vanessa said, “Staff eat in the back,” Elena’s hands were burned from the kitchen, her blouse was damp from steam, and her pride had been carved thin.
But the envelope was still in her apron pocket.

And the hidden camera above the doorway was already watching.
