Chapter 5

The black wrap dress beneath the apron changed the room.
It should not have.
A dress is only fabric.
But people like the Hales believed presentation was hierarchy.
Apron meant servant.
Black dress meant guest.
Stained hands meant shame.
Straight posture meant danger.
Elena folded the apron carefully and placed it over Margaret’s empty chair.
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“Don’t put that there.”
Elena reached into the apron pocket.
Daniel’s face changed before the envelope even appeared.
That told Elena he knew something existed.
Maybe not what.
But something.
The cream envelope was thick, sealed, and marked only with Margaret’s private crest.
No readable text.
No contents shown.
Elena placed it beside the untouched champagne glass.
“Enjoy dessert.”
The sentence was quiet.
Almost polite.
That made it worse.
Daniel looked past Elena toward the dining-room doorway.
The red indicator light above it activated.
Small.
Precise.
Recording.
His shoulders stiffened.
Vanessa followed his gaze but did not understand yet.
She was too focused on the envelope.
The guests stopped eating.
A fork clicked against porcelain.
Someone whispered, “Is that Margaret’s seal?”
Vanessa snatched the envelope from the table.
“Enough.”
Elena looked at her hand.
“Careful.”
Vanessa froze.

For the first time all night, she seemed to realize the envelope might not be meant for her.
