Chapter 9

Daniel tried one last time to sound like a husband.

“Elena, please. We can fix this.”

She looked at him with a sadness that made his face fall.

“You had all night.”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

She gestured toward the table.

“The chair was empty. I served your family. Vanessa humiliated me. You watched.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I didn’t know it would go this far.”

“That is what people say when they benefit from every step before the last one.”

Vanessa snapped, “This is still a Hale house.”

Elena turned toward her.

“For a few more hours, maybe.”

The attorney’s expression remained controlled.

She did not confirm.

Did not explain.

Did not show documents.

The envelope stayed sealed in Vanessa’s trembling hand.

No ownership announcement was completed.

No seizure happened.

No one was evicted.

But the sentence had already done its work.

By midnight.

A deadline.

A clock suddenly ticking through crystal, flowers, roast beef, and old money.

One guest stood quietly.

Then another.

No one wanted to be recorded laughing at Elena once the story changed.

Daniel noticed them leaving their chairs.

So did Vanessa.

The room that had mocked Elena was abandoning the performance.
